Literacy Part Five

Welcome back! Jumping right into our reading blog series, today we are talking about print knowledge. Print knowledge is the way that kids understand the written rules of text. It is broken down into four parts; Organization, meaning, words, and letters. We will take the next little bit to dig deeper into what exactly is print knowledge, print meaning and emergent writing!

Print knowledge includes things like letters, words, print meaning. This is the idea that print is different than pictures, print has specific rules, and that it carries different meaning. This includes:

  • Page Order (knows the order in which pages are read in a book
  • Author (knows the role of the author)
  • Page Organization (knows the reading occurs from the top to the bottom)
  • Title (Knows the role of the title of the book)
  • Print direction (knows that reading must occur from left to right)

Print meaning involves three major components:

  1. Print Function (understands the relationship between meaning and print)
  2. Environmental Print (knows the purpose of print embedded within the environment)
  3. Meta linguistic Concept of Reading (understands the meaning behind reading and contexts in which reading occurs

Emergent writing is made up up three components

  1. Orthography
  2. Composition
  3. Hand-Eye Coordination

Now orthography is the conventional way of writing words using appropriate letters and spelling. Your children should be practicing orthography on a regular basis with you in order to not only improve their writing, but ultimately their READING! Composition is WHAT your child will write, and the hand-eye coordination is what they need to do motorically to write these symbols.
