Picky Eater – When to Ask for Help

The last few posts have gone over reasons that a child may be a picky eater.  Today, we will look at some red flags to know if you should seek help for your child.  It is important to remember that you can always ask for help and opinions if you feel your child may benefit from feeding therapy, even if they don’t have characteristics listed below.  A few of the bigger red flags for feeding difficulties include:

  • Not gaining weight or maintaining growth on the growth chart at regular check ups
  • Choking or gagging during meals
  • Fewer than 20 foods in his/her diet
  • Refusal of entire food groups (fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy, carbs, etc.)
  • Refusal of entire food textures (purees, soft solids, wet foods, hard foods, etc.)
  • Cries when new foods are presented to them
  • Foods that are lost do not come back

If you are concerned about your child’s diet and/or if they are showing any of these difficulties listed above, you can always ask us for advice or more information on if we feel that feeding therapy would benefit you child! We hope to be a resource for all families in whatever capacity possible! Check back for more information on how feeding may be addressed if your child has feeding difficulties!
