Back To School Help and Tips

Hey All!  Are the first few weeks back to school a little trickier to get going on time and keep everyone happy and regulated in the morning?!  It is always difficult to get out of the house, but then you add trying to remember all of the things you need for work and school and kids who don’t remember how to leave the house in a hurry and things just get a little….hectic! Here are a few tips that will hopefully make the transition a little bit easier!

  1. Try to get everything packed the night before bed, this way, all you have to do is get ready and grab! It makes it less likely that items will be forgotten or left!

  2. Make a list of what you need for #1 and have it near the door or where backpacks/bags are! This way, you can look and do a double check that you have all of the bags and the lunch boxes out of the fridge!

  3. Try to keep the evening and morning routines simple and the same from day to day. This will help in your child knowing what is expected and coming next, so they can hopefully be more independent with it as the year goes on!

  4. If your child is constantly asking “what do I do next” or if you have to remind frequently, try using a simple visual schedule! I will have one below you can use for reference or copy! Again, this can help with independence, because I know you also have to get yourself organized and ready to get out the door!

  5. For younger children, remember, they will need shorter directions to follow and complete fewer steps at one time! Instead of giving them a long list of things to do, start with 1-2 and then when they complete those, give them more! Our younger kids will need to start smaller and it’s easy to become frustrated when they ask a million times what to do because they just can’t remember the steps! The visuals will also help with this!

  6. If you have a child that has a hard time separating, come up with a simple and fun “goodbye” that you do each time! It could be “high-five, hug, kiss, goodbye” or a special handshake you do! Let them help come up with it!When it comes to the “goodbye” part, make sure you leave right after.  This will then become routine for them! If you stay when they cry, they will become confused the next time you just leave and cry harder! Remember, keep it simple and fun!

Again, these are just a few simple tips for transitioning back to school for our kids! It is always an adjustment, but hopefully these help a little! Feel free to use and copy the morning routine as well!  Happy school year!!
