Teaching Toddlers Language Part 4

This is our fourth week of our series Teaching Toddlers Language! This week our tip is to…. drum roll please….taking turns and following new directions!!!! Now you may be asking, why is this so important, or “my child always struggles with this, how in the world am I supposed to work on it?”. Great questions. Before I get to HOW we can work on these skills, let me explain WHY they are important. Helping children to take turns, opens many doors for them. They are able to engage better with peers, participate in structured and fun activities like games, and they are able to begin to reciprocate the back and forth that is necessary for all communication! Following new directions is important because it helps kids to be able to follow along in their classroom (either now or down the road), engage in new activities, and learn a variety of new language and syntax such as prepositions (in, on, under), plurals (dog vs. dogs), and articles (a, an, the, etc.). HOW we can work on these skills you may ask, well see some suggestions below!

  • Strategy 4: Taking Turns
    • Try a new board game with simple and QUICK turns
    • Alternate picking a song
    • Alternate picking a show
    • Alternate picking a food
    • Alternate picking a toy
    • Alternate making up part of a story
  • Strategy 4.5: Following new directions
    • Play Hide and Seek where you describe the location of the hidden object
    • Create a new food recipe with real or pretend food
    • Have kids dress their animal or dolls in a certain order
    • Set up a new little people play house, farm, or train set with descriptions of where to place each item
    • Play with magnet/sticker boards where you describe where to put each sticker
    • Mr. Potato head with putting pieces on in a certain order
    • Coloring with verbal directions of what color to do each picture

Need more specific ideas for your little one? Contact us or share with us how you’ve done these projects on our social media sites! Tune in next week for the last portion of this series on play schemes!
