Teaching Toddlers Language Part 2

Well hi there! Welcome to the Family Chatterbox blog! If you are a new reader,  we are continuing our series on providing language intervention strategies in your home to your child. Week two is all about chunking your words into the rule of “3”.

  1. Strategy 2: Break things apart into threes
    • Clump messages that you model for your child, and that your child says, into three parts. Here are some examples below!
      • You did it!
      • I went home
      • I want that
    • Teaching children “carrier phrases” or the beginning of a phrase that always starts the same can be very powerful to be able to get massed practice and repetitions in during the same activities or across activities. Modeling things in three parts for carrier phrases could be similar to any of the following:
      • I want ______
      • I need ______
      • Help Me ______
      • All done ______
      • Give me ______
      • You do ______
      • I do ______
      • Let’s do ______
      • I went ______

What other ways do you think you could incorporate these language strategies into your daily routines? Do these carrier phrases get you thinking about ways that you could use them in an activity that you do with your child? Try the “I want” carrier phrase with a snack, or the “help me” with opening a container that has their toys in it! Comment with your own creative ideas! We’d love to hear from you and as always, let us know if you have any questions!
