Creative Ways to Practice Sounds

Looking for a creative (and easy) way to be able to incorporate more letters, numbers, colors, speech sounds, language activities, or even sight words into your child’s summer activities? Are they getting board with the same old worksheets or drilling cards? Well look no further! Here are a few ways to get those busy bodies moving while learning at the same time!

  1. Cup Towers
    1. Materials: Ball, Marker, Red cups
    2. Directions: Write sounds, words, or anything you’d like your child to practice on red solo cups! Better yet, have your child write on the cups! Stack them up while practicing each word/sound/letter that’s on the cup, then stand back and throw the ball to watch them all fall down!
  2. Fly Swatter Post It Notes
    1. Materials: Post It Notes, Pen, Fly Swatter
    2. Directions: Write sounds, words, or anything you’d like your child to practice on the Post It Notes! Better yet, have your child write on the Post It Notes! Then spread them all out on the floor or a blank wall. Take turns yelling out words and slapping the named word with the fly swatter! Make it more fun and count points or get a little sibling rivalry going!
  3. Coffer Filter Grab
    1. Materials: Coffee Filters, Markers, Twine/string, Scissors
    2. Directions: Write sounds, words, or anything you’d like your child to practice on a coffee filter. Tape up strings and hang the coffee filters from the string. Place the filters just high enough so that your child has to jump up to touch the one that you say. Take turns yelling out words and jumping up to grab the named word! Make it more fun and count points or get a little sibling rivalry going!
