Can’t Carry a Tune?

Can’t carry a tune? Never fear… it’s not your musical ability that will matter when singing with your child! You might be surprised to know that language and music actually have quite a few things in common. For example, did you know that both music and language are universal and specific to humans. They both have pitch, timbre, rhythm, and durational features. Both music and language typically develop within infants at approximately the same time and have auditory, vocal, and visual uses (both use written systems) and are built on structure and rules.

I love incorporating music and songs into my therapy with children. Whether it is working on a specific sound or breathing patterns, music is a fun and engaging way to motivate kids. Below are some of my favorite songs!

  1. 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
  2. Row Row Row Your Boat
  3. Wheels on the Bus
  4. Itsy Bitsy Spider
  5. 5 Little Ducks

Check these songs out on YouTube if you need a refresher on the melody, but don’t settle for watching the YouTube video. Your child benefits from hearing you sing it! Make up some silly actions, get some pictures online, or just belt it out together!
